The challenge

Connect every clinician, the moment decisions matter

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is one of the world’s leading specialist cancer centres, delivering treatment, research and education across its Chelsea and Sutton sites.

The Oak Cancer Centre is a state-of-the-art facility designed to accelerate the development of new cancer treatments, diagnose more cancers at an earlier stage and enhance the treatment experience for patients.

Reliable collaboration technology is essential to how NHS teams operate. Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, clinical discussions and specialist consultations all directly affect patient care. Simple, dependable tools are critical, without adding pressure on already busy staff.

Following successful audiovisual (AV) upgrades in 2022, including boardroom and mobile conferencing projects, The Royal Marsden required a fully integrated AV solution for the centre. It needed collaboration spaces that would support MDT meetings and clinical training from day one.

The solution

In May 2023, our team installed AV technology throughout the Oak Cancer Centre.

The project included two MDT rooms, two education rooms, four meeting rooms and three huddle spaces. All rooms use a consistent Microsoft Teams Rooms setup, so clinicians moving between spaces do not need to relearn how anything works.

The MDT rooms are designed to make clinical collaboration as simple as possible. Large dual displays ensure everyone in the room has a clear view of patient imaging and clinical content. Full room audio means remote attendees can hear and contribute to discussions. Presenter cameras support clear, confident presentations for both in-room and hybrid participants.

Each MDT room also has a dedicated remote support PC. This lets us monitor the AV systems proactively and resolve issues quickly.

Impact on clinicians and patients

Faster MDT collaboration and decision-making

Reliable audio, video and content sharing allow MDT meetings to run smoothly. This helps clinicians collaborate more effectively and make faster decisions about patient treatment.

Less technology disruption for staff

Preset-based touch panel controls make meetings simple to manage. This reduces setup delays and allows clinicians to focus on patient discussions rather than troubleshooting technology.

Better hybrid collaboration

Integrated Microsoft Teams Rooms technology enables specialists across sites and partner organisations to join meetings seamlessly. This broadens access to specialist expertise and supports joined-up cancer care.

Future-ready meeting spaces

The networked AV infrastructure allows rooms to scale and adapt as clinical and operational requirements evolve.

The team made life easy both for me and our overall stakeholders. The experience was outstanding.
